We handle the hospital.
You handle getting better.

Here is how it works for hospital stays and doctor visits, including when to expect payment.

Get covered

Take care of your health

We cover necessary medical treatment. 24/7 emergency assistance hotline.

You end up in hospital

  1. Go to the nearest hospital. Ask them to call our 24/7 hotline.

  2. We confirm your cover with them directly, while you are being seen.

  3. We pay the hospital. You never front the money and there is no deductible.

Ambulance by road, air, water and rail is included, and so is medical repatriation home.

You just need a doctor

  1. See any licensed doctor in the world. No network, no pre-approval.

  2. Photograph the invoice and upload it from your phone.

  3. Money back in your account. Three business days on Native. Traveler is quoted at two weeks and usually lands far sooner.

Traveler carries a €50 deductible per outpatient claim. Hospital stays have none.

What we don't cover.

Know the limits before you choose your cover. Here are the key exclusions and waiting periods, with full details in the policy terms.

Read the full terms β†’
  • Pre-existing conditions

Conditions with symptoms or a diagnosis in the twelve months before your policy starts.

  • Dental, mental health, maternity and check-ups on Traveler

Traveler covers new illness and injury. Native Premium adds routine care, with a twelve-month wait for dental and maternity.

  • Genuinely extreme sports

BASE jumping, wingsuit flying, bull riding and sports you are paid to compete in are excluded.

  • Anything that is not your health

This is health insurance. Trip cancellations, flight delays, lost luggage, theft and personal liability are not covered.

  • Two limits worth knowing about

US and Canada: emergency-only cover for the first seven days of each stay, with an upgrade available. Joining abroad without prior cover: a fourteen-day wait for routine care; emergencies are covered from day one.

FAQ

We have 969 Trustpilot reviews and 77% of them are five stars. The most common thing people write about is how fast and straightforward the claims process was. For hospital stays, we pay the hospital directly so you never front the money. For outpatient visits like doctor consultations, submit your claim online and reimbursement typically lands within days.
Genki Traveler is a travel health add-on for people who already have long-term insurance at home (including public healthcare like Spain's Seguridad Social or the UK's NHS). It covers new illnesses and injuries while you're abroad for up to 12 months. Genki Native is full international health insurance that replaces your home coverage entirely, with options for dental, mental health, maternity, and preventive care.
Yes. Most insurers require you to sign up from your home country. Genki doesn't. You can enroll from anywhere in the world in minutes. The only catch: if you sign up abroad without prior coverage, there's a 14-day waiting period where only emergencies are covered. After that, your full plan kicks in.
Traveler does not cover pre-existing conditions (symptoms or diagnosis within the past year), routine dental, mental health, maternity, or preventive care. Native Premium covers all of those. Neither plan covers extreme sports like BASE jumping or wingsuit flying, trip cancellation, lost luggage, theft, or personal liability.
Your public insurance (like Spain's Seguridad Social, Germany's GKV, or the UK's NHS) typically has limited or no coverage outside your home country. Genki Traveler works as an add-on to your existing public plan, covering you worldwide at any licensed doctor or hospital. If you're moving abroad permanently, Genki Native can replace your home coverage entirely.
Go to the nearest hospital and ask them to call our 24/7 emergency hotline. We coordinate directly with the hospital and pay them so you don't have to. This works at any licensed hospital worldwide. We also cover ambulance transport by road, air, water, and rail, plus medical repatriation to your home country if needed.
Yes, by default. Both Traveler and Native cover climbing, cycling, diving, hiking, kitesurfing, mountain biking, martial arts, skydiving, skiing, snowboarding, and surfing. No add-ons or upgrades needed. The only exclusions are extreme activities like BASE jumping, bull riding, and wingsuit flying.
Hospital stays are paid directly, so there's nothing to wait for. For outpatient claims, Genki Native reimburses within 3 business days. Traveler claims typically take up to 2 weeks, though many members report same-day or next-day reimbursement. One Trustpilot reviewer wrote: "Claim submitted at 11:00, reimbursement confirmation received at 11:01."
