Health insurance for a life abroad

A little less worry.
A lot more world.

For the places you’ll go. And the days that don’t go to plan. Get the care you need, even when you’re far from familiar.

Sign up in minutes. Even if you’re already abroad.

Make yourself at home. Anywhere.

Stay another month.
Take the scenic route.
We’ll come with you.

You don’t need your whole life mapped out. Just the freedom to enjoy it, and someone to turn to when you’re not feeling yourself.

Your plans can change.
Your peace of mind stays.

A new city, a longer stay, a one-way ticket. Take your health cover with you.

A doctor you choose.
Not a list you’re given.

Go to a licensed doctor near you. Spend your energy getting better, not searching a network.

Far from home.
Never on your own.

When it’s an emergency, there’s someone to call. Day or night, wherever you are.

For the life you came for

More “let’s go.”
Less “what if?”

Keep saying yes
to the good stuff.

Surf mornings. Mountain weekends. Your favourite sports are included, with no extra add-on.

A few things to know before you go

Peace of mind starts with knowing what your plan includes. These are the key limits; your policy terms have the full details.

  • Pre-existing conditions

Conditions with symptoms or a diagnosis in the twelve months before your policy starts.

  • Dental, mental health, maternity and check-ups on Traveler

Traveler covers new illness and injury. Native Premium adds routine care, with a twelve-month wait for dental and maternity.

  • Genuinely extreme sports

BASE jumping, wingsuit flying, bull riding and sports you are paid to compete in are excluded.

  • Anything that is not your health

This is health insurance. Trip cancellations, flight delays, lost luggage, theft and personal liability are not covered.

  • Two limits worth knowing about

US and Canada: emergency-only cover for the first seven days of each stay, with an upgrade available. Joining abroad without prior cover: a fourteen-day wait for routine care; emergencies are covered from day one.

Will Genki actually pay my claims?

We have 969 Trustpilot reviews and 77% of them are five stars. The most common thing people write about is how fast and straightforward the claims process was. For hospital stays, we pay the hospital directly so you never front the money. For outpatient visits like doctor consultations, submit your claim online and reimbursement typically lands within days.

What's the difference between Traveler and Native?

Genki Traveler is a travel health add-on for people who already have long-term insurance at home (including public healthcare like Spain's Seguridad Social or the UK's NHS). It covers new illnesses and injuries while you're abroad for up to 12 months. Genki Native is full international health insurance that replaces your home coverage entirely, with options for dental, mental health, maternity, and preventive care.

Can I sign up if I'm already abroad?

Yes. Most insurers require you to sign up from your home country. Genki doesn't. You can enroll from anywhere in the world in minutes. The only catch: if you sign up abroad without prior coverage, there's a 14-day waiting period where only emergencies are covered. After that, your full plan kicks in.

What's not covered?

Traveler does not cover pre-existing conditions (symptoms or diagnosis within the past year), routine dental, mental health, maternity, or preventive care. Native Premium adds dental, mental health, maternity, and preventive care, subject to policy terms and waiting periods. Neither plan covers extreme sports like BASE jumping or wingsuit flying, trip cancellation, lost luggage, theft, or personal liability.

I already have public health insurance at home. Do I still need Genki?

Your public insurance (like Spain's Seguridad Social, Germany's GKV, or the UK's NHS) typically has limited or no coverage outside your home country. Genki Traveler works as an add-on to your existing public plan, covering you worldwide at any licensed doctor or hospital. If you're moving abroad permanently, Genki Native can replace your home coverage entirely.

What happens if I need to go to the hospital?

Go to the nearest hospital and ask them to call our 24/7 emergency hotline. We coordinate directly with the hospital and pay them so you don't have to. This works at any licensed hospital worldwide. We also cover ambulance transport by road, air, water, and rail, plus medical repatriation to your home country if needed.

Are sports like surfing, diving, and skiing covered?

Yes, by default. Both Traveler and Native cover climbing, cycling, diving, hiking, kitesurfing, mountain biking, martial arts, skydiving, skiing, snowboarding, and surfing. No add-ons or upgrades needed. The only exclusions are extreme activities like BASE jumping, bull riding, and wingsuit flying.

How fast do claims get paid?

Hospital stays are paid directly, so there's nothing to wait for. For outpatient claims, Genki Native reimburses within 3 business days. Traveler claims typically take up to 2 weeks, though many members report same-day or next-day reimbursement. One Trustpilot reviewer wrote: "Claim submitted at 11:00, reimbursement confirmation received at 11:01."
